The replacement of tilted signalling posts was a regular, disruptive, sector-wide job for rail operators. It was accepted that a new concrete base needed to be laid close to the old post and left to set. When the new signal was eventually installed, all trackside sensors also needed to be reinstalled to match the new signal placement – a time consuming and costly job that called for formal design work.
When WCL was tasked with replacing a swathe of signalling posts, we evaluated the works for constructability and identified an entirely new, revolutionary approach. WCL designed and built a new type of signalling base, which used a novel piling system to effectively straighten the existing straight post ladder and keep it in place indefinitely. There was then no need to disconnect anything during replacement, allowing the job to be done in a few hours rather than 8-12 hours, with much less complexity and avoiding the need for formal re-designs.
This signalling base design is now used across the rail sector, in the UK and beyond.
